Our Story

Better to Light a Candle than Curse the Darkness

I was inspired by the Eternal Flame and by my life-long interest in the language of symbolism (Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, ancient mythologies). For example: on an archetypal level, spirit (fire, ideals) yearns to be free of the restrictions of matter (earth, practical matters), and yet spirit needs matter through which to express itself.

I follow a Zen approach in my life and art. I see in each rock a miniature landscape, the microcosm reflecting the macrocosm -- as above so below; as within, so without.

Each rock suggests to me a new pattern of lights on its surface and I choose only the most beautiful rock I can find. I find the subtle, natural metallic slate surface stunningly beautiful; shiny glazes are not attractive.

In an inconspicuous Zen way, I chisel the slate to reveal colors, deeper layers, and textures giving it additional dimension. I drill holes for the fiberglass wicks. Wick holders which I designed are specially made of brass and control the flame height.

I take pride in my work and guarantee the quality of each lamp. With this in mind, I also copyright, sign, and date each piece. My lamps are as ingenious in their simplicity and function as they are beautiful and unique. Simply remove one wick and insert a funnel to re-fuel. Replace the wick & light.

    Description goes here

Our separate fires will kindle one flame;

Gather in peace, gather in thanks;

Gather in sympathy now and then;

Gather in hope, compassion, and strength;

Gather to celebrate once again.
